Pets and your HVAC system

Dogs, cats, lizards, or birds, we all love our pets. They can be a pain in the backside at times, but they’re part of the family and we love them. They love us, and they love to have (and protect) their space too. A lot of times our pets are very territorial of the backyard. When they’re territorial, they like marking their territory, and sometimes they mark it right on your air conditioner. Yes, this is a blog post about when nature calls for your pets. With the holiday last week and summer barbecues, your pet might be outside more frequently. If that’s the case, make sure your pets don’t mark the air conditioner as theirs.

Pet urine can damage your AC unit and lead to major breakdowns and a loss of efficiency. Fortunately, some preventative measures can be taken to prevent this from happening. Put a small guard or cage around your AC unit to prevent your pet from getting too close to it. You can also elevate your AC unit by putting it on a stand or a mount on the side of your home.

In addition to marking their territory in the backyard, don’t forget that pets also shed and have dander that gets into your home’s air circulation system. When dogs shake their selves off it can put a lot of it’s fur and other things into the air, and that’s when it gets sucked into the HVAC system. As it moves through the duct work eventually it gets caught by the filter, but the more your pets shed the more regularly you should replace the filter. If your filter is clogged or dirty it won’t let sufficient air flow through it. Without sufficient air flow the electrical components of your HVAC system can begin to overheat or cause an electrical parts breakdown.
