Capacitors store a measured amount of electrical current on start for a motor or compressor giving an added boost at start then cuts out of the circuit once the motor or compressor is running. A faulty capacitor can prevent the electrical circuit from having the added current necessary to deliver the voltage needed for a motor or compressor to start which can damage the motor or compressor and create excessive heat in the windings of the stator and armature damaging the motor or compressor.
